As well as teaching piano and Music Theory, Lorenzo also prepares students for the Music Aptitude Test. He teaches at Ebony & Ivory Music School in Colindale (see map) and offers home visits.
The Music Aptitude Test (MAT) is a test used by many selective secondary schools to identify a child’s musical talent and grant admission to the school. We have been successfully preparing students for MAT for over 10 years, both through teaching and making available sample test materials.
What is the Music Aptitude Test?
The MAT is a test of aptitude and therefore does not require a child to have received formal music training or have accomplished a certain grade level. The MAT is therefore designed to provide a level playing field for candidates so that children who have been studying a musical instrument for a number of years do not have a clear advantage.
Likewise, knowledge of musical theory is not required as these tests are based entirely on aural responses. Often the MAT uses electronic sounds so that children that are already studying music do not have any advantage over students that haven’t.
Music aptitude tests cover many areas, such as pitch, melody, rhythm, texture, shape and more and the child is expected to provide his or her answers in writing.
There are many schools that use MAT as a selective criterion for admission. Here is a list in the North-West London area that’s not exhaustive:
- Ashmole Academy
- Bushey Meads School
- Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School
- Chelsea Academy
- Dame Alice Owen
- Haberdashers’ Aske’s / Prendergast Hilly Fields / Crayford Academy

If you are thinking of registering your child for a music aptitude test you are more than welcome to contact us since our students very often go through these tests and we have up-to-date information on deadlines, requirements and the format of the test.
We have produced several complete MAT practice tests with answers based on our experience on preparing our students and their feedback following the tests. Practising this material should give candidates a clear advantage when doing the actual test since the exercises reflect the kind of questions which make up most MAT tests given in schools. Take a look at the MAT education products which will help your child prepare for the MAT.
